Project: June Mountain Forest Restoration

Description: This ecological forestry project represents the second of a multi-phased approach to restore key ecosystems and protect vital ski, drinking water, and communications facilities on the June Mountain Ski Area (JMSA) in the Inyo National Forest. Mimicry of the natural fire regime in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) using fire surrogate thinning methods - where reintroduction of fire to improve ecosystem health is fraught with public opposition due to safety and air quality concerns - will restore and protect biodiversity hotspots and defend lives, property, mountain culture, and rural economies from harm caused by catastrophic wildfire in California’s awesome Eastern Sierra Nevada. Project outcomes include treatment of 165.5 ac of pine forests, 24 ac of aspen stands, and 20 ac of meadows on the June Mountain Ski Area over 30 months from July 15, 2020 through December 31, 2022.
