Project: Coastal Floodplain Evaluation and Planning

Description: This will provide technical assistance related to new coastal mapping and coastal data merge efforts. FEMA, USACE and the Ocean Protection Council have launched a $35-50 million study to acquire Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) topographic data bathymetry, acoustic and sonar data in order to map the seafloor and near shore area, eventually producing FEMA Coastal V Zone maps. DWR participates in coordination activities and ensures collaboration so that future data, criteria, standards for FEMA, USACE or DWR projects are compatible with future coastal studies. Once the coastal maps are completed and coastal areas are mapped into new 100-year flood zones, there will be an influx of technical assistance needs, coastal floodplain risk awareness, climate change and sea level rise education and public information activity.
