This project will involve construction of a 3,200-foot long auxiliary spillway having six submerged tainter gates. The Army's Corp of Engineers flood damage reduction components of the project are being implemented in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamations' Dam Safety Program. Working together, the two agencies are constructing the formerly separate flood control and dam safety projects as a single Joint Federal Project (JFP) that meets the shared goal of a reduced risk of flooding in the Sacramento area in an expedited and cost-effective manner. Total project amount includes State support costs for project implementation.
Department of Water Resources
The project will increase flood protection by allowing early releases of flood waters. The new spillway will allow larger releases of water earlier. The project will match downstream channel capacity by the American River Common Features project.
