Project: South Carlsbad Boulevard Climate Adaptation Project

Description: Grant to the City of Carlsbad for a planning and demonstration project incorporating managed retreat and long-term sea level rise adaptation of public infrastructure and coastal resources. South Carlsbad Boulevard, a section of the Pacific Coast Highway, is a heavily trafficked route along the coast in Carlsbad, San Diego County. This southbound road is highly vulnerable to flooding and erosion and has been closed due to storm events. The project will plan for climate adaptation for this vulnerable stretch of coastal infrastructure and facilitate greenhouse gas emission reductions through habitat enhancement and development of non-vehicular transit options expected from the planning process. The project area includes both the City of Carlsbad and State Parks jurisdiction – South Carlsbad State Beach and Campground.
