Project: Grasslands Floodplain Restoration Implementation Project

Description: The Project will remove targeted sections of obsolete state levees to reconnect the San Joaquin River with 120 acres of historic floodplains in Great Valley Grasslands State Park (GVGSP). The Project is necessary to provide access for Central Valley Chinook salmon and steelhead to critical floodplain rearing habitat in winter and spring months, thereby improving success of outmigration and helping recover salmon to the San Joaquin River.

Reference Number: 3600BP1896046

Implemented By: American Rivers

Objective: Specific objectives of this Project are to: 1. Reconnect 120 acres of historic floodplain habitat and optimize the frequency and duration of inundation under the San Joaquin River Restoration Program's proposed flow regime. 2. Reduce the average river flood stage by 0.5 feet along 2 miles of river and reduce maximum river velocities in key locations by 2.0 feet/second for the system design flow. 3. Improve channel habitat for native fish and aquatic organisms by increasing channel complexity and providing temperature refugia. 4. Reduce the extent of invading exotic vegetation by 30% by restoring natural hydrology and harnessing natural floodplain processes. 5. Reduce the costs and ecological impacts associated with continued levee maintenance along at least 2.5 miles of levee. 6. Establish a successful precedent that will catalyze additional floodplain restoration projects along the San Joaquin River.
