On January 31, 2018, the Ocean Protection Council authorized $190,503 to Fathom Consulting to collect and synthesize the best available information and science on 30 state-managed marine species in alignment with the California Ocean Protection Act (COPA). COPA states that a goal of all state actions shall be to improve monitoring and data gathering, and advance scientific understanding, to continually improve efforts to protect, conserve, restore, and manage coastal waters and ecosystems (Section 35510). Once complete, the information that is compiled and synthesized for each of the 30 state-managed marine species will be posted on OPC’s website and remain accessible to stakeholders, decision-makers and the public, increasing awareness and providing ongoing, long-term resources for fisheries information.
Each of these 30 state-managed marine species synthesis reports will include information on the biology and population status of the species; the number of vessels, landings and socioeconomic factors related to the fishery that targets the species; past and current management measures that guide the fishery, and the potential impacts of climate change on the species and/or fishery.
Secretary for Natural Resources
This project will enhance the sustainability of California’s ocean fisheries to protect marine ecosystems, port communities, and coastal economies, by providing up-to-date, transparent information on 30 state-managed marine species through synthesizing the best available science and information on these species into 30 publicly-available reports. This project will provide the best available scientific information to support the state’s efforts to protect, conserve and manage coastal and ocean ecosystems.
