Project: Optimizing Agricultural Water Use Efficiency: An Integrated Remote Monitoring System

Description: This research/demonstration project to develop a wireless monitoring network to calibrate a dynamic modeling tool for assessing the efficiency of a closed collaborative production system (CPS) loop, characterize nitrate leaching patterns and water input-output relationship to derive the best practice of irrigation using wastewater, provide educational opportunities to encourage STEM students to participate in analytical research, and provide for visualization of CPS dynamics to improve communication on transdisciplinary approaches and increase technical transferability to achieve water conservation goals.

Objective: The goal of the proposed project is to systematically understand the water conservation efficiency and productivity of a Collaborative Production System (CPS) that integrates crop irrigation management and dairy operation. Our project will pursue the following three objectives: 1. Science objective: Develop a wireless water-quality and -quantity monitoring network to aid the calibration of empirical models and the creation of a temporal-dynamic modeling tool for assessing the efficiency and performance of CPS. 2. Sustainability objective: (a) Systematically and collectively understand the dynamics of CPS in order to optimize its water-use efficiency and determine the risk reduction strategies for meeting long-term agricultural sustainability goals. (b) Characterize nitrate leaching patterns and water input-output relationship in CPS to derive the best practice on wastewater application for irrigation 3. Education objective: (a) Provide assistantships and educational opportunities to encourage STEM students to participate in quantitative and analytical research. (b) Develop a technical manual to guide the application of CPS, which can be used as a training material for the agricultural sector. 4. Communication objective: Visualize CPS dynamics to improve the communication on transdisciplinary approaches, and to increase the transferability of field experimental results to real-world best agricultural practices in order to achieve water conservation goals from both quantitative and qualitative aspects.
