Project: Agricultural Crop Conversions Program

Description: The Agricultural Crop Conversions Program (Conversion Program)to help the Rancho California Water District (RCWD/District) actively implement Conditional EWMP #1 "Facilitate Alternative Land Use" by providing financial incentives to growers to convert 295 acres of relatively high water-use crops to those that require less irrigation water. Pre-conversion inspections will be conducted to establish baseline data, identify anticipated water savings, and determine the amount of financial incentive necessary. Expected benefits include reduction in agricultural irrigation water demand of 760 acre-feet per year, a 25 percent improvement in irrigation efficiency, energy savings, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Reference Number: 3860-P01-101

Implemented By: Rancho California Water District

Objective: The goal of the Agricultural Crop Conversions Program (Conversion Program) is to create measurable on-farm water conservation and water use efficiency benefits through conversion of crops with relatively high irrigation water requirements to those that require less irrigation water. The Conversion Program will help the Rancho California Water District (RCWD/District) actively implement Conditional EWMP #1 "Facilitate Alternative Land Use". - Convert 295 acres of relatively high water-use crops to those that require less irrigation water, representing an attainable 37.7% of available acreage to convert and 2.8% of total agricultural acreage in the District. - Decrease Agricultural Water Demand by 760 acre feet per year (AFY). - Improve on-farm irrigation system efficiency by 25% through irrigation system conversion/replacement activities that will accompany crop conversion. - Realize secondary benefits including energy savings (3,066,144 kWh/yr) and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (1,879,546 lb CO2e/yr).
