Project: Improved Irrigation Management Through Airborne Crop Water Stress Detection

Description: This project will provide technical assistance and outreach to growers on irrigation system distribution uniformity (DU). Aerial imaging (aka Aerial Lab) will be used to estimate irrigation system DU at the tree- or vine- scale across an entire field, which in essence is a more detailed aerial application of the traditional mobile irrigation lab (MIL) assessment. Common irrigation inefficiencies detected through aerial imaging include broken pipes, plugged drip emitters, maintenance issues, and improper scheduling and application. By qualitatively and quantitatively describing the magnitude and extent of affected areas, growers can identity possible short-term fixes and longer term scheduling strategy shifts, both of which lead to conserved water. This project will also provide on-site consultations with an agronomist and end of year workshops for grower participants in this project to help growers decide on measures to take for the following season.
