Project: City of Hermosa Beach Infrastructure Vulnerability Assessment

Description: The City of Hermosa Beach will install two shallow groundwater monitoring wells at an approximate depth of 30 feet at locations approximately two city blocks inland of the beach in order to conduct an assessment of infrastructure vulnerability due to sea level rise and associated salinity intrusion into the shallow groundwater table. Results from this assessment will be used to develop and prioritize potential adaptation strategies. Specifically, the City will collect subsurface hydrologic data, combine it with future surface water elevation projections, and apply that information to existing infrastructure plans to forecast potential risks and vulnerabilities. The analysis will focus on three main infrastructure elements: (1) the existing sewer collection and conveyance system; (2) storm drain outfalls that could be inundated at high tide and cause localized flooding; and (3) existing and planned systems necessary to meet stormwater quality standards, such as infiltration trenches. Resulting recommendations will underpin planning and capital improvements.
