Project: Sustainable Communities Planning Grant and Incentive Program

Description: The Department of Conservation manages a variety of grants and contracts on behalf of the Strategic Growth Council (SGC). On December 11, 2013, the SGC approved funding for vegetation mapping in high priority areas within the proposed corridor of the California High Speed Rail (HSR) over Tehachapi Pass at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Kern county. The data collected and final digital vegetation maps from this project will assist the SGC eligible program applicants, regional transportation agencies, joint power authorities, non-profit organizations in the planning of sustainable communities and development of transportation and regional plans which meet the goals of AB 32 and SB 375, key goals established by the Council. The vegetation data and GIS map are critical for protecting natural resources in the HSR Corridor by allowing informed planning to avoid these resources when developing land use and transportation plans, general plans and large-scale plans.
